Do you ever feel insignificant? Do you feel overlooked or undervalued? Do you ever feel like you could disappear and no one would notice? I will admit, these are all feelings I have struggled with from time to time. As a Christian and a daughter of the Most High God, these feelings are nothing more than an attack from our enemy in his attempt to undermine what God has created. Satan is unable to change who God is, so he tries to change how we see ourselves, our self-worth and value.
Think about that for a moment…God, the maker of the universe, created you and He loves you. You are important to Him! Paul writes to the Colossians, regarding Christ, “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
How did God create you? What color eyes do you have? Are you a boy or a girl? Do you have pale skin or dark skin? These are all characteristics that help identify our physical shell and they are all designed for a specific purposed by God. “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.”
I’ve been struggling lately with feeling like I am not enough. I feel like I need to work harder to prove that I have value. But a thought occurred to me this past week, let’s compare the ant and the eagle. An ant ranges in size from about 2 to 25mm each and they weigh between 1 to 5mg. They are tiny and at first glance, insignificant. An eagle on the other hand can weigh up to 20 pounds and has a wingspan of up to 9 ft. An eagle is majestic, powerful, and fearless. In my mind, I often feel like an ant when I long to be seen as an eagle. But Satan likes to take what God has created and turn it inside out and upside down, causing confusion and uncertainty. It’s just like in the garden when Satan tricked Adam and Eve into disobeying God. It wasn’t really about the fruit, it was about how they saw themselves. Satan offered Adam and Eve an opportunity to be “like God”. He made them think that God hadn’t been honest with them, and that He was trying to withhold His very best from them. In essence, Satan was telling Adam and Eve that they couldn’t trust God and they needed to take matters into their own hands.
So the question comes down to, do I trust God and trust how He designed me? Am I satisfied in being the person He made me to be, or do I strive in my insecurity to try to become someone that He did not make me to be? We can’t all be eagles. Some of us need to be ants…and if we are, is that really a bad thing? Proverbs describes the ant as wise and a hard worker. Solomon cautions those who are lazy and instructs them to look to the ant as an example. “Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief, officer, or rulers, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest.” “Four things on earth are small, but they are exceedingly wise: the ants are a people not strong, yet they provide their food in the summer.”
God made the ant and God made the eagle. Each are made by God to be used in accordance with His will. How much more valuable to God are we? “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” When you feel the attack of the enemy, bearing down with the lies of insecurity, STOP and remember WHO created you! You were created in the image of the God of the heavens. You are the reason that Christ left His throne in heaven, was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life and died a horrific death on the cross. He did all of that—for you! Powered with that knowledge, how could we ever question our value to God?
I will leave you with a clip from Priscilla Shirer. c Stop listening to the lies and embrace His truth today!
