You’ve heard the saying, “Location, Location, Location”! Everything depends on the location. A house in Mississippi does not cost the same as a house in Malibu; location is one of the most important driving factors in considering a piece of property. So, if location is such an important factor, why don’t more people consider the location where they will spend eternity?
William Law, an English priest from the 1700’s, said “If you have not chosen the Kingdom of God first, it will in the end make no difference what you have chosen instead.” Why would people choose anything over eternity in heaven? The great writer C.S. Lewis said, “Christianity asserts that every individual human being is going to live forever, and this must be either true or false. Now there are a good many things which would not be worth bothering about if I were going to live only seventy years, but which I had better bother about very seriously if I am going to live forever.”
Paul writes to the Christians living in Rome, “For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:6-8 ESV) Paul goes on to explain that we are so wretched in our earthly state, that nothing we can do, outside of the sacrifice of Christ on the cross, can save us from the wrath of God’s judgement. Why are we under judgment you may ask? Compared to the complete righteousness of God, his immeasurable power and glory, we are nothing! You cannot dodge the reality of your sin, as if playing some cosmic game in P.E. One way or another, the reality of your sin will be exposed.
We are all sinners. Dare I say that I cannot get out of bed in the morning before I am sure I have sinned. In order to understand the greatness of God and how much he truly loves us, we must see ourselves for what we really are. We must see the reality that none of us can get through a single day without committing a sin. And even a little white lie, is a sin before the Father, and keeps us from fellowship with Him. We must stop thinking about our sins as “little” or “big”; forgiving ourselves, and determining we aren’t so bad, since we haven’t committed any of those “big” sins, like those “other people”. “…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…” (Romans 3:23 ESV)
Given our wretched, fallen nature, and the immeasurable love and sacrifice that Jesus showed us at the cross, what other option can there be? Accept Him today, receive His free gift of salvation and He will guarantee your eternity will be spent in paradise. Eternity is an awfully LONG time. John Owen said, “Satan’s greatest success is in making people think they have plenty of time before they die to consider their eternal welfare.” Don’t let Satan trick you into spending your eternity under God’s wrath and punishment! Ask Jesus to come into your heart today—and secure your place at the table with the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, Jesus Christ!
