I’ve been listening to a lot of sermons of late, as our church is seeking a new pastor. After many years of service, our current pastor is going to retire. Those of us tasked with finding his replacement are working diligently to find the right man to lead us. I was reminded this week, while listening to a sermon online, that we cannot talk about God’s love for man, without also examining God’s holiness. The entire reason that Jesus was crucified on the cross, was to pay our penalty, to take away our sin, before a holy God. So, why would a God of love, want anyone to suffer death? Don’t all roads lead eventually to heaven?
Jesus tells us in Matthew 7:13-14, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” This may seem confusing, why wouldn’t God want all to be saved? Let me tell you friend…HE does! But, knowing who Jesus is and following Him, are two very different things. Don’t be caught by surprise! Matthew 7:21, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord’, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” To know Jesus, is to serve Him. And serving Him, means recognizing our sin and the holiness and power of the one true God. Compared to Him, we are nothing!
Who of us can create anything, out of nothing? Who of us can speak to the void, and bring forth life? Only God is capable of such power! “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, ‘Let there be light’, and there was light.” (Genesis 1:1-2) God spoke and the sun was created! The sun, which is 27,000,000 degrees Fahrenheit, was spoken into existence! How? By an all-powerful and holy God!
This blog is called, Chased by the Devil, because Satan is a roaring lion, prowling the earth, seeking someone to devour. If you do not recognize your sin and your need for forgiveness, Satan will devour you! You will be one calling out at the end of days, Lord, Lord! “Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you.’”
Dear friend, if there is a God with this much power, and He wants to have a relationship with you, why would you seek another path? Sin! Do not deceive yourself. For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. There is not one person worthy to face God, not one worthy to receive heaven as their reward. We are all broken! We are all sinful! But I can hear you say, I’ve never killed anyone. My good deeds outweigh my bad….NO! Before a God powerful enough to speak the universe into existence, you are void! Your sin, my sin, separates us from God’s presence. Our only hope is in the atoning sacrifice that Jesus made on our behalf, at the cross.
Jesus is at the door of your heart, knocking, seeking you to open it and accept Him in. Do not allow pride to carry you down the broad path that leads to destruction! Acknowledge your sin today and ask Jesus to come into your life. Then at the end of days, you will hear His sweet voice say, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
