Today is my birthday! 53 years ago, I was brought into this world, a whopping 3 pounds, 10 ounces. No, I wasn’t a preemie, my mother’s placenta didn’t develop, and I was starving! Fast forward, 53 years, and I appear to have to opposite problem! How many of you out there can relate?
I have experienced so many things in the past 53 years! I have worked and fought very hard to build the life I always wanted. When I was a child, the “sign” that you were wealthy, is if you had a refrigerator with ice on the door! I wanted that! I wanted all those things I saw that I didn’t have. So I worked… I worked all my life and God has blessed me richly.
I met my husband when I was 17 years old on a beach in Hawaii. My stepdad Darrell was stationed there, working for the FAA in the radar station, inside Diamond Head. My husband, Kelvin, was a sailor in the US Navy and I was a junior in high school. We hit it off immediately. I was always safe with Kelvin and I could always trust him. I didn’t have to be on my guard, like with other “boys”. He was special. We got married the summer after I graduated and moved to his hometown in Indiana, a couple months later. We worked very hard; multiple jobs, over 40 hours a week, and we built a home.
33 years later, I am thinking back on my life and thanking God for the many blessings he has given us. We have two children who are happy and healthy! We have three grandsons, who are perfect in every way! There have been many struggles. We’ve been through financial difficulties, rebellious children, sickness, and accidents. We’ve lost parents, grandparents and other family members. We had a time when we didn’t think our marriage would endure. But through everything, all the years, we just knew that our family was the most important, the life we were building was important. And if we worked TOGETHER, we could accomplish anything! We just did what we needed to do, and we did it as a team.
In my morning devotion today, it says, “Wait with me for a while. I have much to tell you. You are walking along the path I have chosen for you.” We are all walking a path. Have you chosen your own path, or do you believe that God is walking along side you, encouraging you along the way, guiding you, teaching you? “Stay on the path of Life with me. Trust me wholeheartedly, letting my Spirit fill you with Joy and Peace.” –Sarah Young, Jesus Calling
